Two Thousand Twelve

2012 has been a year of change. Some of the most momentous moments of my life happened this year. I graduated from college, started my first job, and most importantly, got engaged. I really am in a different stage of life than I was a year ago. Everything I worked so hard for is finally coming together, and I cannot wait to see my life continue to evolve in 2013. As always, thank you for your continual support of this site, and I look forward to what the new year has in store!

In the kitchen: Nutella Sandwich Cookies

I know what you're thinking: another Christmas cookie. But wait, this cookie is not like the rest. It is not a sugar laden. It is nutty and creamy. These are the perfect Christmas cookie, the best I've ever made. In a sea of gingerbread and sugar painted confections, these hazelnut nutella babies stand out. I have a serious sweet tooth, but I usually only want one piece of dessert. These leaves an entire batch of cookies or cake to someone else. I don't really see the problem in this, but others do. Over the last few days I have had my fare share of these cookies. They are just that good. Seriously, they are the best cookies I've ever made.

1/3 cup hazelnuts
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 stick butter, salted
1/2 cup sugar
1 large egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Finally grind hazelnuts in a food processor. In a bowl sift together flour, salt, and baking soda. Add ground hazelnuts and stir to combine.

In a separate bowl cream butter and sugar until almost doubled in size (about five minutes). Add egg yolk and vanilla and beat until combined. Once all the wet ingredients are combined, slowly add the dry ingredients in increments of 3. Take dough out a bowl and pat into a ball. Cover dough in plastic wrap and allow to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Once dough as chilled, roll out on a well floured surface until 1/8 inch thick. Using a 2 inch cookie cutter, cut out rounds as close as possible. Transfer rounds to a baking sheet and back for 10 minutes.

When cookies are cooled, spread with 1 tablespoon Nutella and enjoy!

Holiday Work Party

statement necklaceclutchdresscuffglitter pumps

Tonight is my first holiday work party. I think it is going to be fun to dress up with my coworkers, but I don't want to wear anything to showy or trendy. Keep your look simple and festive. This dress is perfect. I lovely winter blue that would look great with gold accents. If you're attending your first work, let me know how it goes.

Kale & White Bean Minestrone

Will and I are trying to eat less meat. For the first few weeks we weren't so successful, there were a lot of carbs involved. But, over time we've gotten better. This biggest change has been planning meals at the beginning at the week so we're not struggling to come up with dinner at 6 pm. Another change has been adding new vegetable into our diet. Kale was high on the list of veggies to try. I went back and forth on what to try it in, but in the end soup won. This soup was perfect. Warm, rich, and a little salty. I was afraid I wouldn't like the texture of kale, but it tasted like any other wilted green. If the weather is a little chilly this weekend, I suggest you try this soup. I may dabble in kale chips this weekend. Wish me luck.

Kale & White Bean Minestrone
serves 8-10

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, decided
2 carrots, decided
4 cloves of garlic, minced
2 cups cremini mushrooms, sliced
1 bunch kale, chopped
1 can cannellini beans, drained
1 28oz can crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup red wine
4 cups vegetable broth
1 sprig of rosemary
salt and pepper
pecorino cheese

In a large pot heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and carrots and cook until softened (5 minutes). Once softened, add the mushrooms and garlic, cook for 2 minutes or until softened.

Deglaze pot with red wine, stir to get brown bits off bottom of pot. Add crushed tomatoes and chicken stock, bring to a boil. Once boiling add sprig of rosemary and kale. Season with salt and pepper.

Let simmer covered for 45 minutes. Serve warm with pecorino cheese.

Winter Elements: Gloves

Oh hey- it's that time again. Time for the temperatures to be dipping to the 30's. Time for me to refuse to go outside, unless I am bundled like a small child. Gloves are necessary for me when the temperature gets chilly. I have a beautiful black leather pair that Will brought back from Argentina for me. I do love how soft and warm they are, but I'm interested in something a little more fun this year. This  pink polka dot pair from Madewell is calling my name. A long pair of stripped gloves would be fun too, or you can keep it classic with a simple pair of leather gloves. Which pair will you choose?

Life Lately

The days keep getting shorter, and I can tell. The sun starts setting at my office around 4. By the time I leave at 5:30 it is completely dark. This only wants to make me go home and curl up in a ball of my sofa. I do just that most nights. For the time being there is nothing wrong with my routine, but I'm looking forward to a more active lifestyle in 2013. What are you looking forward to next year?

I believe in celebrating one moment at a time. Growing up, my family bought and decorated our tree and house around mid December. I think it is better this way. Let Thanksgiving and Halloween have their time before moving to Christmas. After that, let the festivities begin! We decorated our tree last weekend. For our first tree, it doesn't look too shabby. I'm proud of it.

Engagement Session

I've been eager to share our engagement session by Sully Clemmer. We had such a fun time taking these pictures, and I do not think they could have turned out any better! Enjoy your weekend! We are putting up our tree tonight. Hopefully the cat won't take too much interest in it.

Life Lately

Life really does pickup around the holidays. Work has been extremely hectic, but equally rewarding. Before Thanksgiving all the Jan/Feb issues were sent to the printers. After that, a few days at home was what I needed to reboot. I'll be shopping for my first Christmas tree tonight. Isn't it amazing how things change so quickly?

Winter Elements: Tartan

silk shirtpantsdessert platesscarfflatsblazertablet case

I have a hard time getting in the Christmas spirit before Thanksgiving. I think that we should celebrate one holiday at a time. So, with Thanksgiving behind us I can move on to the next holiday. To me, nothing is more appropriate for the holidays than tartan. Wear it on a shirt, blazer or flats. No matter how you choose to wear tartan, you are sure to look festive.

Life Lately

Sorry for the sporadic posting, life has been exhausting. We are trying to ship all the January/February issues before Thanksgiving. So, this has lead for a very long week. Hopefully I'll be back to more regular posting after next week. Besides work, I've had time for a little fun. Hope you have too!

Splurge vs Save: Booties

A pair of booties are great for fall. But, you're only able to wear them a few months out of the year, and you can only wear them sparingly. So, a few weeks ago when I went to purchase a pair I bought mine at target. Yes, target. Some things a worth spending a lot of money on, and to me these weren't the case. I've already worn them a handful of times and plan on keeping them throughout the season. I've been wearing mine with cropped pants, but I want to try them with a skirt soon. I'm thinking they'll hold up just fine. Will you be splurging or saving on a pair of booties this season?

Also, don't forget to vote!

Monday Moodboard: Oxblood

Mary JaneLipstick BagSweaterLionSkirt

Oxblood, maroon, crimson... Whatever you choose to call this dark red color, you won't be mistaken in it. This is the it color for fall. Though this would not be my first go to color, I'm willing to give it a try. I think I'll start of with the color blocked oxblood and navy pleated skirt. Will you be trying this trend?

10 things...

As stated in an earlier post, fall is not my favorite season. I prefer the warmer spring and summer months, but there are a few things that make these chilly months bearable. Cozy socksknit hatstartan scarfriding boots, and wool pants help me stay warm when the temperature dips below 50. My favorite Thanksgiving side  dish has always been stuffing. So, this updated stuffing recipe by Martha Stewart may grace my table. Add a nice warm  rustic tart, and you have a great meal. A warm mug and a cozy fireplace make for the perfect evening. And, football. I don't really love football, but I do love the grove. Have a great weekend!

Happy Halloween!

Honestly, I didn't put a lot of thought into my Halloween costume this year. I was going to be a black cat, but my furry ears seemed to have vanished in my many moves. So, I picked up the next best thing: minnie mouse ears. I don't think I will win the office costume contest, but I can at least enjoy it, and maybe pick up a few ideas for next year. I hope everyone has a spooky day, and don't forget to enjoy a few treats!

Life Lately

There is something I have to tell you: fall is my least favorite season. I'm crazy, I already know. But hear me out. All the leaves fall off the trees and it starts to get cold. What is so great about that? This all means that winter is coming (which is my second least favorite season). Over the last week I have been trying to get in the fall spirit. I carved a pumpkin, took a trip to the highest point in Alabama with my cat and Will, and have watched a little football. I think I'll spend the rest of this month hiding in my cubicle while we ship out the Jan/Feb issues.

This & That

I've seen a lot of animal prints this season. Birds, dogs, and even foxes. This scarf and sweater are simply adorable. Pair them with leggings and your favorite pair of riding boots, and you a ready to face an autumn day. Will you being trying this new trend? Let me know.

Weekly Favorites

I am J.Crew obsessed. So, when they posted their new arrivals yesterday I instantly fell in love with almost everything. My favorite piece is this Coat. A Peplum coat. Can it get any better. I think I need it. Which pieces are your favorite?

Life Lately

This past weekend I traveled to Oxford, Miss. It was one of the best weekends I've had in a long time. Oxford in the spring is my favorite time of year, but Oxford in the fall on a game day is a close second. It amazes how much I can miss a town. I've moved a lot over the years, but i'm not sure if I will ever get over Oxford. There is nothing like it. I'm not a small town girl. I need things to do and places to go. Yet, the little town of Oxford always charms me. I assume this is how every recent grad feels about their college town, but I was lucky enough to attend Ole Miss and spend four glorious years in Oxford.

Fall Elements: Jean Jackets

Jean Jackets- bad 90's throwback or cool recycled look? I've been on the fence about this one since they came back in style last spring. Yet, I've decided that with the right styling they can actually look fashionable. Pair them with a casual dress or slim pants and a scarf, and you are ready to go. This jean jacket by madewell is my favorite. I know it would be comfortable which is one of it's perks. Jean jackets also aren't very heavy which is nice for a warm southern fall. So, is a jean jacket for you?

Monochromatic Monday: Navy

I went to a Catholic High School where are school colors were navy and yellow. Let's just say they took more advantage of the navy in our school uniforms than yellow. So, after I graduated I avoided anything navy. Now that I'm a few years out of high school I can appreciate navy again. It is the perfect neutral that you can wear with just about everything. These are a few of my favorite navy pieces. ONE This belt would look great wrapped around a sweater dress. TWO How can you not love bird plates? THREE  A very cute case for your iphone. FOUR Polka dot scarf would look lovely with a chunky sweater and jeans. FIVE Cashmere and stripes, nothing better. SIX Knit loafers for fall. SEVEN Chunky lime green and navy bracelet. EIGHT Send someone you love a very special birthday card.

Zara Home

Zara Home launched in the US on Tuesday. I was a little surprised by what I found. To me, Zara's clothing always seems very minimalist and modern, but their home collection is the opposite. Filled with soft colors, rounded edges, and feminine touches this collection is spot on for me. Here are a few of my personal favorites. ONE Do these wine goblets remind anyone else of the Barefoot Contessa's wine glasses? I need these for my table immediately. TWO A very simple bathroom set. THREE A pretty gold vase for holding flowers or standing alone. FOUR A pup candle. Need I say more? FIVE & SIX Two very pretty trays. They would look great in a bathroom or on a coffee table. SEVEN A fur throw for when the weather gets chillier.

This & That

Like every other American, I associate hearts with valentines day. But, this little sweater from J.Crew caught my eye a few monts back. At first I didn't like that the heart was asymmetrical, but it has certainly grown on me. Could you wear hearts without feeling childish? I think I finally can.

October 9, 2012

Day & Night

Peter pan collars can look a little childish, but when you dress them up with tartan trousers or a metallic skirt you can make them look more put together. Both looks are monochromatic, which work well for fall, especially in dark hues. Put on a black coat if there is a nip in the air, and you are ready to go.

October 5, 2012

Friday Favorites

ONE: Hello lovely oversized sweater. Will you please jump in my closet so I can wear you with boots and scarves? Pretty please. TWO: I have been pinning over Karen Walker sunglasses for ages. I think the time has come where I just have to do it, but which should I choose? Thesethese, or theseTHREE: I plan on whipping up these pumpkin muffins this weekend. I may even ad a little cream cheese for even more decadence. FOUR: The cutest striped dress for fall. Plus, I can wear it to work with flats. FIVE: These lamps are way out of my price range, but I'll use them for inspiration when picking out a pair for myself. Isn't the pale blue color lovely? SIX: These have been all over pinterest. As much as I would love to own a pair, sadly they do not come in my size. I will have to keep searching for the perfect pair of loafers. Not that, that is a bad thing. Enjoy your weekend, and do a little shopping!

Fall Element: Leopard Coat

A few years ago, I would have thought a leopard coat was tacky, and honestly, it probably would have been. Now, leopard print is an everyday norm and used as a neutral element. This image has been flooding my pinterest page. Caitlin McGauley got it just right with this illustration. Leopard coat, black skinnies, and red flats- the ideal fall look. The Collette coat is gorgeous, but out of my price range. Asos just put their lovely coat on sale. I think it may be in my future.

October 3, 2012

This & That

Lately, I cannot get enough stripes. Striped dresses, tops, and sweaters fill my closet and are all on constant rotation. I'm sure everyone at work is getting tired of seeing me wear the same thing over and over. So, a new piece is probably in my future. A pretty little striped skirt or peplum top would be a nice additive to my collection. Plus, these would look great with a warm sweater or boots, if it ever gets cold enough in Alabama to wear them.

Life Lately

Honestly, a lot has changed in my life. Over the last four months I graduated from college, moved twice, started my first job, and got engaged. For most people, these changes happen over a longer period of time, but for me, this is what feels right. I'm ready to join the "grown up" world. College is over, and I'm on to a new adventure. I was hoping to stay actively blogging over the summer, but with a new job and move, I have been constantly exhausted. Now that I'm more in the swing of things, I'm hoping to post more regularly. So, heres to a new chapter in my life. I am more than ready.

September 12, 2012

This & That

Dots on dots on dots. That is how I am feeling as of lately, and I am not complaining. The shoes, oh I need them. I'm excited for cooler weather. Sadly, in the deep South it is still far oh. Oh well, a girl can dream about wearing a polka dot sweater.

Fall Element: Scarves

Can Madewell do no wrong? Seriously, every scarf in their fall collection is lust worthy. I am particularly  swooning over the "flowerhill" print. Pair it with a chunky white knit and red jeans, and you are more than ready for fall. Which will you be toting this season?

June 14, 2012

Guacamole is one of my favorite dips. I seriously think I could eat it every day. I use this recipe. It is so easy. You just chop everything, drop it in the bowl, mix, and serve. I'm sure it will be a standard for the this summer when avocados are perfectly ripe.
